Chapter 9

Oliver found Rita and Zem standing with a group of resistance soldiers around the quartermaster’s area. They received their guns back while the others picked up gear for the coming event as well. He let them know he was waiting for Dora. When she contacted them, they’d know their next steps.

We can’t handle both the settlement and the boneyard without support.

Nostros arrived with several more soldiers. “Looks like we’ve got quite the turnout from them. All but the youngest children want in on the action. They’re drawing lots on who should stay with them.”

“Yeah?” Oliver asked.

“Apparently, the ervas have pushed hard enough that they all want some payback.” Nostros leaned closer to the three of them. “To be honest, I’m not sure what’s happened. Everything I’ve seen around here has been somewhat pleasant, though underground. I guess we’ll need to visit this settlement to fully understand the conflict.”

“Oppression,” Rita replied. “Slavery. Pretty much all it takes to push people over the edge... to be pissed off about what happened to them. It doesn’t have to be about better places to live or better food. Sometimes, it comes down to respect for life. Those pricks probably did terrible things. It’s no surprise the humans here want vengeance.”

“There you go,” Zem said. “Rita’s always had a soft spot for when people are treated poorly.”

“Yeah, call me civil.” Rita rolled her eyes.

“Anyway,” Oliver interrupted. “Let’s get back topside. See if we can reach Dora from out there.” As they walked, he kept his voice low. “I’m going for the boneyard myself. Nostros, I want you to be involved in attacking the settlement with Blake. Rita, Zem... where do you think you’d be used best?”

Rita sighed. “The stupid boneyard.”

“That’s for you guys,” Zem replied. “Believe me when I say this, I’m not being a coward but I believe I should stay behind and ensure these people remain safe.” Rita raised a brow. “They’re sending pretty much every soldier. If they don’t have someone back here to watch out for them, they’ll probably just be killed.”

“That’s not a bad point,” Oliver replied. “You really want to do that?”

Zem shrugged. “Not really. But it does sound better than going into that research facility to be eaten by monsters. And I’m not much of a charge the line kind of guy. They don’t really need a sniper out there.”

“Can we not say eaten?” Rita asked. “Please?”

“I’m just telling the truth,” Zem replied. “Do with it as you will.”

“I’m throwing it right back,” Rita said.

“Okay, okay, enough.” Oliver shook his head. “You two are like a variety show act. Torrence will go with you, Nostros. We need a well-armed but small team. Anything too big will be a disadvantage in those corridors.”

“She won’t like that,” Nostros replied. “I think she looked forward to going back in there to find the research facility.”

“Well... we’ll talk about it.” Oliver grinned. “Just don’t let her know she has that much power.”

“She’s a sergeant,” Nostros said. “She knows what she has.”

They reached the surface, stepping out of the building to where Dora landed before.
